YUSD Board Meeting and Staff Layoffs February 12, 2009

There was not much good news at the YUSD board meeting on Monday, Feb. 9. Steve Raupp, acting superintendent/YHS principal and Srini Vasan, chief business officer of YUSD, laid out the dire financial situation that our school district is in due to the State budget crisis. They projected a $2.4 million shortfall for next year’s district budget. Anticipating such a shortfall the board voted for the intention to layoff 7 elementary school teachers between Rivergold and Coarsegold. Also, all 3 vice-principals would be pink slipped. Other staff layoffs were voted for as well. According to Mr. Raupp, 7 teacher layoffs is the worst case scenario–the “target” is 5 teacher layoffs between the two elementary schools. Regardless, there could be teachers losing their jobs and larger class sizes at Rivergold.

Though there are many other factors that have to be played out between now and next year,  layoffs will be issued on March 15th. The vote for these layoffs will be at the next regular board meeting on Monday, March 2nd.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

EMAIL THE YUSD BOARD. They are open to ideas and input. Let them know about the invaluable work of our teachers and staff. Encourage them to visit our school and see firsthand the impact of our staff. Let them know that you will be at the next board meeting.

Here are their names and emails…

BE AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING–MONDAY, MARCH 2 AT 6:30 PM AT RIVERGOLD. It is the first YUSD board meeting at our school. Rivergold parents need to show up in force and support our teachers and staff. It will go late, so arrange for child care.  Hope to see you then.
